I proposed three projects initially which where:

Recreate a location from an anime.

This will include:

  • Choosing a suitable location.
  • Gathering Research images.
  • Creating a block out of the space in UDK
  • Creating assets.
  • Unwrapping.
  • Texturing.
  • Populating the space.
  • Making the space more interactive.
  • Add movable things to the level or people.

This will help me develop my modelling, unwrapping and texturing skills. It will also give me the opportunity to try and create cell shaded textures instead of the more realistic ones we have been aiming to create. This will also make me focus more on my time management skills to try and get everything done to a good standard and produce all the assets in time to allow me to move on and add more detail to the level. This will also be a useful project to help me replicate existing designs.

Create 1 – 3 unique fighting stages.

This will include:

  • Researching fighting stages from existing games.
  • Sketching ideas for the stages.
  • Blocking out the stage in UDK.
  • Creating assets.
  • Unwrapping.
  • Texturing.
  • Populating the space.
  • Adding movement or interaction in the fore ground or background.

This will help me develop my modelling, unwrapping and texturing skills. It will also force me to try and work on my time management skills as I will aim to make three stages at first and creating three unique stages will be difficult if I spend too much time focusing on one specific thing. This could also allow me to try different texturing styles for each stage.

Recreate a location from a film.

It will also help me get better at time management and replicating existing designs.

All three of these were suitable to take forward for the term. I chose to recreate a location from an anime as it sparked my interest the most. I then improved the proposal adding more achievable goals as my tutor pointed out that making a full location was overly ambitious. For the location I chose to create a city from Attack on Titan, I chose this one in particular because it’s setting interested me and all of the buildings are based off of German architecture allowing for real world reference images as well as ones from the material.

Recreate a town from Attack on Titan.

Primary Goal:

Create two unique modular buildings and a modular segment for the wall.

Secondary Goal:

Create a street with smaller assets populating it.

Tertiary Goal:

Create the town and populate it with people.

This will be created to be a portfolio piece. If I complete the tertiary goal I will look into making it a map mod for an existing game that uses UDK.

This is the proposal I made for the street project:

I am proposing to make a comic shop that has a cult cinema on the second floor. The building will have two front doors but the entrance to the cinema will be a door to a stair way. The upper windows will have films that will be running that week. Above the door to the cinema will be a cheaply made sign with the name of the place. On the door to the cinema will be the opening times on an old fashion yellow card. The comic shop entrance will be an inset door with an old fashion three section glass window showing that the building was converted. The windows will have little hooks were the metal security grate clips on for security during the night and has posters for the latest comic series in the window. The sign will stand out as being the newest part of the building.

This is an initial sketch of my idea:

shop front idea 1

I will start my research by looking at the comic shops around town and old shops with the same sort of shop front as the image in my head.
